IN THE AMNIOTE TREE OF LIFE

Abstract
Background: The phylogenetic position of turtles is the most disputed aspect in the
reconstruction of the land vertebrate tree of life. This controversy has arisen after many different
kinds and revisions of investigations of molecular and morphological data. Three main hypotheses of living sister-groups of turtles have resulted from them: all reptiles, crocodiles + birds or squamates + tuatara.

Although embryology has played a major role in morphological studies of vertebrate phylogeny, data on developmental timing have never been examined to explore and test the alternative phylogenetic hypotheses. We conducted a comprehensive study of published and new embryological data comprising 15 turtle and eight tetrapod species belonging to other taxa, integrating for the first time data on the side-necked turtle clade.

Results: The timing of events in organogenesis of diverse character complexes in all body regions is not uniform across amniotes and can be analysed using a parsimony-based method. Changes in the relative timing of particular events diagnose many clades of amniotes and include a phylogenetic signal. A basal position of turtles to the living saurian clades is clearly supported by timing of organogenesis data.

Conclusion: The clear signal of a basal position of turtles provided by heterochronic data implies significant convergence in either molecular, adult morphological or developmental timing characters, as only one of the alternative solutions to the phylogenetic conundrum can be right.
The development of a standard reference series of embryological events in amniotes as presented here should enable future improvements and expansion of sampling and thus the examination of other hypotheses about phylogeny and patterns of the evolution of land vertebrate development.

Disminuye el número de serpientes en el mundo

LA CANTIDAD DE SERPIENTES ESTÁ DISMINUYENDO EN TODO EL MUNDO, SEGÚN UN ESTUDIO GLOBAL.

BBC: - Los investigadores examinaron información de 17 poblaciones de culebras que incluyen ocho especies durante las últimas décadas y notaron que la mayoría se había reducido.

Por razones que aún no se han establecido algunas poblaciones se redujeron en número drásticamente alrededor de 1998.

Los expertos, que publicaron los resultados de la investigación en la revista Biology Letters, consideraron el hallazgo "alarmante", y dijeron que se necesita hacer un trabajo de investigación más profundo para comprender las causas.

"Ésta es la primera vez que analizamos la información de esta manera, y lo que muestra es que en distintas partes del mundo se produjo una disminución marcada, en un período corto", afirmó el líder del proyecto de investigación, Chris Reading.

"Lo que vimos nos sorprendió", le dijo Reading a la BBC.

"Y no tenemos idea que es lo que tiene de particular ese período de tiempo (alrededor de 1998)".

Reading y su equipo del Centro de Ecología e Hidrología del Reino Unido hizo esta investigación en conjunto con otras instituciones de Australia, Francia, Italia y Nigeria.

FALTA INFORMACIÓN

El principal problema para cualquiera que quiera hacer un estudio global como éste es, sencillamente, la falta de información.

Monitorear las poblaciones de culebras implica marcar a los individuos -para poder identificarlos- con una mancha en alguna de sus escamas o implantándoles un microchip.

Los trabajos de campo pueden prolongarse por meses y deben repetirse todos los años.

Los investigadores confían en que cuentan con casi toda, sino toda, la información de larga data para su estudio, aunque en este contexto "larga data" puede significar más de una década, y en algunos casos más de dos.

No obstante, dentro de un espacio de tiempo relativamente corto, ocho de las 17 poblaciones se redujeron en tamaño -algunas en más del 90%- y una sola pareció aumentar.

Entre las especies en declive se incluyen la áspid y la culebra lisa europea (ambas en Europa), la víbora de Gabón (del oeste de África) y la pitón real.

Las poblaciones se redujeron incluso en las áreas protegidas, lo cual indica que la pérdida progresiva del hábitat natural de los animales salvajes, que tiene lugar en todo el mundo, no es la única causa posible.

Una reducción similar en el número de ranas y tritones en un período anterior fue finalmente atribuida a una infección causada por un hongo (Quitridiomicosis).

CLIMA

El año en las culebras comenzaron a desaparecer, 1998, fue uno de los años más cálidos de la era moderna debido a la presencia de El Niño. Esto hace pensar en la posibilidad de que el clima pueda tener alguna influencia.

Según el equipo liderado por Reading, muchas pueden ser las causas. Por esta razón, están solicitando la colaboración de otros investigadores que dispongan de información sobre culebras para ampliar el panorama.

"El objetivo del estudio era decir ´esto es lo que encontramos´ y decirles a otros especialistas, ´ahora vayan y cotejen con sus datos´", afirmó Reading.

"Pero creo que con tantas poblaciones en distintas partes del mundo mostrando una reducción en su número, se trata de algo más que de una coincidencia

A fin de incrementar sus conocimientos sobre la fauna autóctona de anuros y lograr aprobar el primer parcial de la materia, deberán buscar la información sobre una familia, subfamilia o tribu de anuros de Argentina.
Solo se podrán elegir géneros en el caso de los últimos de la lista mencionada.
Al elegir, escribirnos rapidamente al blog o al email personal (sebapesteguia@gmail.com) para reservar el tema, ya que no podran repetirse temas.
Luego de una búsqueda de información, deberán presentar un informe escrito (word o power-point) que contemple los ítems detallados más adelante. Los trabajos deberán exponerse brevemente en clase (10 minutos), mediante una presentación power-point.

Sign The Petition To Get Atrazine Banned!

Please sign our petition to get the harmful herbicide Atrazine banned! Atrazine is one of the world's most common pesticides: over 80 million pounds of it were used on American crops last year, and it has been in use for 50 years. This harmful pesticide turns male frogs into females at concentrations as low as 2.5 parts per billion. Atrazine causes cancer in laboratory mammals and developmental problems in fish. Atrazine is the most commonly detected pesticide in rainwater, groundwater and tapwater in the USA. Atrazine spray gets lifted into the clouds, travels hundreds of miles and then falls down from the sky in rainwater: half a million pounds of it each year.

Frogs and humans share half our DNA, so Atrazine can't be good for humans either. That's likely why the European Union banned the harmful pesticide in 2004. But the company that produces it, Syngenta (based in Switzerland!) has $11 billion in revenues, and has a huge lobby to keep Atrazine on the market in the USA. Our goal is to get Atrazine banned by the 3rd Annual Save The Frogs Day (April 29th, 2011)!

Scientists have published the first genome sequence from an amphibian.


Xenopus tropicalis, the western clawed frog, joins the list of sequenced organisms that includes chicken, horse, rat, yeast, platypus, and human being.

It has about 20,000 genes - about the same as a human - and scientists say it sheds new light on genetic evolution.

Conservationists say analysing the genes could lead to new ways of combating threats such as the often fatal fungal disease chytridiomycosis.

Presenting their results in the journal Science, the researchers also suggest it may lead to better understanding of the threat posed by endocrine-disrupting ("gender-bending") chemicals, to which amphibians are especially sensitive.
Filling the gap

Forty-eight scientists from 20 institutions collaborated on the study, led from the US Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, California.

More detail on the genes that give resistance could have massive implications for captive breeding programmes

"When human genome work was wrapping up around 2002, we were discussing what should be next," JGI's Uffe Hellsten told BBC News.

"At that time there were a couple of furry mammals in the pipeline, and the chicken and at least two fish - but there seemed to be a gaping hole in the branch that constitutes the amphibians, and it seemed logical to fill that hole."

The species chosen - X tropicalis - is a close relative of a standard laboratory animal, the African clawed frog X laevis.

This animal has been a staple of pioneering research in fields such as cell differentiation, the role of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and cloning.

During the 1940s and 50s, their sensitivity to human hormones also led to their use in pregnancy tests.

For this project, X tropicalis was preferred because it reproduces much faster than its more famous cousin.
The chytrid fungus is devastating amphibians numbers around the world

Its genome is also roughly half the size.

That is because at some point in evolutionary history, the lineage leading to X laevis duplicated its DNA, meaning it now carries a double cargo of the double helix.

The team reports that certain regions of the genome, clustered around specific genes, are remarkably similar to equivalent regions in the genomes of chicken and Homo sapiens - despite the fact that their lineages diverged some 360 million years ago.

"When you look at segments of the Xenopus genome, you literally are looking at structures that are 360 million years old," said Dr Hellsten.

"They were part of the genome of the last common ancestor of all birds, frogs, dinosaurs and mammals that ever roamed the Earth."
Immune attack

However, it is the set of genes unique to amphibians that has excited conservationists.

For the last few decades, frogs and - to a lesser extent - salamanders have been hard hit by a water-borne fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.

It is spreading across the world and has caused mass deaths in many species. It is implicated as the major factor in several species extinctions.

Recently, scientists in several institutions have been working on a conservation strategy that would take naturally-occurring anti-chytrid chemicals from species that are immune, and use them to protect others.

Xenopus appear to be immune themselves; and unravelling the genetic blueprint of its chemical defences could perhaps help to accelerate this line of research.

"Xenopus is the genus from which chytrid was first recorded, in [a museum specimen from] 1938, and they seem to be resistant," said Robin Moore, amphibian conservation officer with Conservation International.

"More detail on the genes that give resistance could also have massive implications for captive breeding programmes, helping us select animals that are resistant."

A valuable next step, he added, would be to compare variants of these genes between amphibian species - especially from those that are highly vulnerable to chytrid.

Dr Hellsten also suggested the sequences could shed light on the mechanism of endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) - colloquially known as "gender-benders" - which impact many animals, but amphibians in particular because of their skin's high permeability.

"Understanding the effects of these hormone disruptors will help us preserve frog diversity and, since these chemicals also affect humans, could have a positive effect on human health," he said.
